Facts about the icefjord
In the summer of 2004 the Ilulissat Icefjord was listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The purpose of the List is to protect the world’s cultural and natural heritage against destruction, ensuring that future generations will also be able to enjoy earth’s unique landscapes and cultural memorials.
The distinguishing characteristic of Ilulissat Icefjord is caused by a combination of the large production of icebergs by the glacier Sermeq Kujalleq at the bottom of the Icefjord and the presence of the iceberg bank at the mouth of the fjord. For thousands of years the rich natural resources have enabled human beings to live in the harsh Arctic nature. For the last 150 years the Icefjord has been a significant source of information about glaciology.
