Administration

The administration of Ilulissat Icefjord is carried out according to the “Management Plan for the World Heritage Area Ilulissat Icefjord''.
The overall objective of the management plan is to protect the values (glaciology and natural beauty) that constitute the rationale behind the registration of Ilulissat Icefjord on the World Heritage List.

Furthermore, the management plan should ensure that there is a sensible balance between protection and use.

The Administration Is Adapted Continually
The management plan was prepared in 2009 by the Ilulissat Icefjord Office in co-operation with Greenland’s Home Rule Government. The plan was established through dialogue with interest groups and the population of Ilulissat, who through citizens’ meetings have had the opportunity to contribute with their views.

The administration of the World Heritage Area is continually adapted to the current problems in the area. Annual citizens’ meetings ensure that the citizens retain influence on the process.

Who Is Responsible?
The management of Ilulissat Icefjord takes place in co-operation with Ilulissat Icefjord Office, the Ministry for Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency, Energy and Environment of the Government of Greenland, and the Agency for Culture and Palaces of Denmark.

Ilulissat Icefjord Office, which is located in Avannaata Municipality, is responsible for the surveillance and daily running of the World Heritage Area.
