Ilulissat Icefjord Office

Avannaata Municipality gives high priority to the work carried out in the World Heritage Area. In 2008 Ilulissat Icefjord Office was established and a manager responsible for the World Heritage Area were appointed. 
The Icefjord Office is dedicated to the daily, local administration of the World Heritage Area Ilulissat Icefjord in co-operation with the Greenland Home Rule Government. The administration of the World Heritage Area focuses on the protection of the values that constitute the rationale behind the registration of Ilulissat Icefjord on the World Heritage List. Besides the site manager in the office, there is also a communication manager and a park ranger.

What Does the Icefjord Office Do?
Ilulissat Icefjord Office attends to all tasks associated with the World Heritage Area including:

  • Management and administration (preparation of the administration plan, the monitoring plan, and hearing answers).
  • Mediation of issues associated with the area (website, signposting, folders, informative films, etc.).
  • Facilities in the area (pathway systems, gangways, the building of toilets).
  • Information for – and dialogue with – the users of the Icefjord area, including citizens, companies, associations, scientists, etc.
  • Being available to the press and assisting during official visits to the area.
The daily running of the Icefjord Office is financed by Avannaata Municipality. The majority of the Icefjord Office projects are financed by external foundations. The Icefjord Office is not associated with private companies or commercial interests.
